T is for Time: Learning to Pause Before Reacting

For girls in the juvenile justice system, time often feels like something that happens to them—rushed decisions, chaotic environments, and external control. The "T" in our STRENGTH model stands for Time, because learning to pause and make intentional choices is a powerful step toward change.

Why Time Feels Out of Reach
Trauma can create a sense of urgency that keeps the body in survival mode. Many girls say, "I just reacted" or "I didn't think." Our work is about creating space between impulse and action.

Practicing the Pause
We teach mindfulness and grounding exercises to help girls notice when they are triggered. Breathing deeply, counting to ten, or even stepping outside for a moment can provide the time needed to make a thoughtful choice.

Taking Ownership of Time
We help girls reflect on how they spend their time: What gets their energy? What do they want to change? This allows them to set daily intentions and long-term goals, and build routines that support who they want to become.

Daily Practice: "Time to Think" Journal Prompts

  • What would I do differently if I gave myself time to think first?

  • What moments today felt rushed? Calm?

  • What helps me slow down when I feel out of control?

Closing Thought:
Time doesn't have to control us. When girls learn to pause, breathe, and choose, they shift from reacting to responding—and that shift is everything.
